The School Bus endorsement test

A school bus driver holds both endorsements. School Bus does not replace Passenger Transport, it adds to it, so the studying is the six subjects of the one and the four of the other.

Four subjects

49 CFR 383.123(a)(2) names loading and unloading children; emergency exits and evacuation; railroad-highway grade crossings; and operating practices and procedures.

Loading and unloading is the whole safety case

Children are hurt around a stopped school bus more often than inside a moving one. The area close to the bus where the driver cannot see is the single most examined idea in this endorsement, and the questions come at it from several directions: where a child should walk, where they should never bend down, how the driver counts them, and what to do when one is missing at the stop.

Evacuation is a decision before it is a procedure

The exits questions are less about which window opens and more about whether to move children at all. Staying aboard is sometimes the safer answer, and the test asks candidates to tell the cases apart.

The crossing subject appears twice in your studying

It is on this list and on the Passenger list, and that repetition is deliberate in the regulation rather than an oversight. A bus carrying children stops at crossings under a procedure of its own.

The one count New York does publish

School Bus is the only knowledge test the state gives a question count for. Our own forms run twenty questions. For every other test on this line the count is ours and we say so.
