The Hazardous Materials endorsement

Hazmat is the only endorsement where the test is not the long pole. It carries a federal security threat assessment, with fingerprints, and that takes weeks rather than days. A candidate who studies first and applies afterwards has added the whole waiting period to the end of their timetable for no reason.

Five subject groups

49 CFR 383.121 sets them. Hazardous materials regulations. Hazardous materials handling. The operation of emergency equipment. Emergency response procedures. Operating practices and procedures.

It is a paperwork test, and that is not an insult

Most of the other endorsements are about how a vehicle behaves. This one is largely about what is written down: shipping papers, placards, labels, the table that says what may travel with what, and who is responsible for which part of it. The single most common shape of question is which party carries a particular duty, and the answers turn on the difference between the shipper, the carrier and the driver.

Emergency response is the other half

Two of the five groups cover equipment and response, and they are practical rather than clerical. What the driver does about a leak, what is in the emergency response information, when to keep away and what never to do to a fire in a placarded load.

It is the longest of our endorsement forms

Ours run thirty questions rather than twenty, because five subject groups covering a regulation this large cannot be sampled honestly in twenty. That is our decision about our own form. New York publishes no question count for the real test.

Passing it

Three choices a question and 80% to pass, the same as every other knowledge test.
