What is on the New York 17-70 General Adjuster exam?
One hundred questions, sixteen topics, and nothing above 11% of the paper.
Last verified 14 October 2026. Lengths, times, topic weights and the pass mark are from the DFS and PSI Insurance Candidate Information Bulletin, updated April 28, 2023.
The widest adjuster exam New York sets
Series 17-70 is the Independent General Adjuster exam: 100 questions in 2 hours, with a pass mark of 70%. That is 70 correct answers on the scored questions. The bulletin adds that 5 to 10 experimental questions may also appear and are not scored, so you cannot tell which ones count.
Where the single-line exams go deep on one kind of claim, 17-70 goes wide. Its outline has sixteen topics, and the biggest is only 11% of the paper.
The sixteen topics, by weight
- Adjusting Losses, 11%
- Homeowners (2011) Policy, 10%
- Auto Insurance, 9%
- Commercial Package Policy, 9%
- Businessowners (2010) Policy, 8%
- Other Coverages and Options, 8%
- Insurance Regulation, 6%
- Insurance Basics, 6%
- Accident and Health Insurance Basics, 6%
- Dwelling (2014) Policy, 6%
- Workers' Compensation Insurance, 6%
- Reports, 4%
- Fidelity Coverages, 3%
- Aviation Hull Coverages, 3%
- Aircraft Liability Coverages, 3%
- Surety Bonds, 2%
What the spread means for studying
Property forms dominate. Homeowners, dwelling, commercial package and businessowners together make up a third of the exam, so knowing what each section of those policies covers, and what it excludes, pays more than anything else.
The small topics are where people lose easy points. Bonds, fidelity and aviation add up to 11 questions, the same as the largest single topic. A candidate who has only handled property claims has usually never read a surety bond, and the outline expects you to know its three parties and the main bond types.
Reports and the health basics are there because a general adjuster may see any claim. They are short sections, but they are not optional.
Pacing, by arithmetic
Two hours for 100 questions is 72 seconds a question. That is the most time per question of any adjuster exam; the 60-question exams allow 60 seconds. It is enough to read a coverage scenario twice. It is not enough to get stuck on one.
How our practice exams follow it
Our three practice exams for 17-70 are 100 questions in 2 hours, and each topic gets the share of questions the outline gives it. Turning percentages into whole questions is our rounding, and every wrong answer carries its own explanation.
