ISEE Mathematics Achievement:
level by level

The last section of the exam, and the only one whose content changes sharply between the three levels.

Last verified 12 August 2026. Counts and timings are read from our own ISEE practice exams and the exam engine, 12 August 2026.

Mathematics Achievement is the conventional mathematics paper on the ISEE: a question, four answers, no columns to compare. What changes between the levels is not the format but the syllabus.

Where the levels part company

Lower and Middle Level are arithmetical from end to end — fractions, decimals, percent, ratio, rounding, order of operations, perimeter and area, unit conversion. Across both forms of each, not one of the 136 Lower Level items and not one of the 168 Middle Level items uses algebraic notation.

Upper Level is where that changes. Fourteen of its 168 items solve for an unknown, use an exponent, or work with slope. That is a small share of the paper and a large share of the difference between the levels, and it is the reason an Upper Level practice paper is the wrong preparation for a Middle Level candidate.

Length and clock

Lower Level is 30 questions in 30 minutes — a full minute each, the most generous rate anywhere on the ISEE. Middle and Upper are 47 questions in 40 minutes, roughly 51 seconds each.

No calculator

None is allowed at any level, so mental arithmetic and written working carry the whole section. The numbers are chosen to be workable by hand, which is itself a hint: an answer that needs long messy arithmetic usually means the intended route was a different one.

It comes last

Mathematics Achievement is sat after everything else, and at Middle and Upper Level that means 47 questions with roughly an hour and a half already behind you. Practicing it fresh, on its own, measures something the real exam will not ask for.

Where to practice it

Our ISEE practice exams cover the four scored sections at all three levels, two forms each, with no questions shared between the forms. Every wrong option carries an explanation of why a student would have picked it. The real ISEE also opens with an unscored essay that is sent to schools; we do not set one, so that part needs practicing elsewhere.

Practice the real thing

Our ISEE exams are full length and written from scratch — every wrong answer carries its own explanation, so a child learns what they got wrong and why. Ten questions are free, with no account and no card. After that it is five credits an exam.
